The Billy Fury Story. All lip curling, smouldering sexiness, Billy Fury was the British Elvis and the most complete cool cat Rock 'n' Roller ever!

As Billy Fury's band, we had dreamed of performing his hit songs and recapturing the memories of those times before his tragic death in 1983, whilst bringing the sound of a British musical icon to a new audience who perhaps cannot remember those heady days. Of course, no one could replace Billy, with his smouldering good looks and awesome stage presence, so it's a dream that remained that for many years... just a dream.

Then, by chance, we saw a performance on television's Stars In Their Eyes, by a young man called Colin Gold. We were immediately struck not only by Colin's close physical resemblance to Billy, but also by his vocal quality. That combination prompted us to approach him with the seed of an idea. After several meetings and many rehearsals, that chance viewing of a TV appearance culminated in the finished production which is... Halfway to Paradise.

Excavation Directors Dr Mark White, of the University of Durham, and Dr Paul Pettitt, of the University of Sheffield, said: "We hope that the information recovered from these excavations will contribute to widely-debated issues in human evolution - specifically whether the expansion in numbers of our own species tens of thousands of years ago was connected with the extinction of the Neanderthals. Britain has so far failed to play a role in this fascinating and important debate, and we believe that Kents Cavern is the prime site where answers could be found."

TOYS & AUTOMATA

As the festive season comes around again, the Abbey is delighted to bring you an exhibition that will reach the child in all of us. The exhibition features the charming and entertaining toys and automata made by artist Rodney Peppé.

Rodney Peppé is the author/illustrator of over 80 children’s books and the creator of Huxley Pig (ITV) and Angelmouse (BBC TV). Rodney's friendship with the legendary artist-craftsman Sam Smith led to his interest in toys and automata. He made working models for his picturebook illustrations and articulated character models for both his books and television programmes. His book Moving Toys was published in 1980 and has subsequently published three more books on toys and automata.

Rodney Peppé’s work is included in collections in Japan and he has exhibited in one-man shows at the V & A Museum of Childhood; The National Theatre; Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museums and The Holburne Museum of Art, Bath. In 1995/6 his work toured for 18 months in a one-man show with the Area Museum Council for the South West.
