Ocean BMW Torbay Week 2009 is the second year of this exciting NEW event replacing the former three existing Torbay sailing regattas (Torquay, Brixham and Paignton).
The first year was a great success and we are ready to do even better this year. That means lots of good racing for a wide variety of sailing vessels, along with tons of after-sail fun at Torbay's sailing and yachting clubs. There's plenty of shore based excitement for visitors and spectators too! And if you have raced in past regattas, you will know we provide fantastic race management, good windward leeward, Olympic and trapezoid courses to suit the fleets. The races will generally be short and competitive for all classes.
The event will be a spectacle for adults and children alike, bringing the summer to a fabulous climax.

The Dartmouth Harbour Master Captain David White is looking forward to the challenge of bringing this vessel into the harbour at approximately 0900 hours and turning her in the vicinity of the Higher Ferry, before bringing her back to her mooring in the middle of the Harbour. We are sure that the 694 passengers on board will enjoy their visit to the Regatta and will be made most welcome before they sail at approximately 2200.
Rowing Events
One of the Regatta's most popular events is the Rowing.
The Friday local rowing programme comprises events in Whalers, and "Blue" Boats, these boats are owned by the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta, and were given to the Regatta by Organisations and Local People.
The WEARA events at regatta are extremely popular with local rowing clubs. We have Eights, Fours, and Pairs fighting it out over the testing course.

Torbay Steam Fair 2009 31st of July - 2nd of August
Location: Brixham
The New Year is upon us and already there is a lot of activity in the organisation of this years Steam Fair. As the number of entries are rising year upon year, we have had to take the decision to add another field to the Show Site.
This will allow us a lot more scope for the Working demonstrations and the Heavy Haulage section.
Boxing and Wrestling.
One of the major attractions at this years show, especially for the lovers of the old time fairgrounds, will be the late Ron Taylor’s “Excelsior” Boxing and Wrestling Booth. This famous fairground attraction is the last of it’s kind still traveling, although only making special appearances. The Booth was founded in 1861 by Rons Great Grandfather and has appeared regularly at all the big fairs including Nottingham Goose Fair.
Steam Ploughing.
For the first time, we will be having Steam ploughing demonstrations. This is a demonstration that we have wanted to have at the Fair for a number of years but lack of space has been a problem. With the addition of the extra field we will be able to have a vintage crop cutting demo, followed by the Steam Ploughs. The corn will then be taken to the threshing drum for the next demo
We already have a number of new Steam exhibits booked in for this years show, details of which will be published later.
PUBLIC CAMP SITE
We are pleased to be able to provide a Public Camp site for this years show.

Excavation Directors Dr Mark White, of the University of Durham, and Dr Paul Pettitt, of the University of Sheffield, said: "We hope that the information recovered from these excavations will contribute to widely-debated issues in human evolution - specifically whether the expansion in numbers of our own species tens of thousands of years ago was connected with the extinction of the Neanderthals. Britain has so far failed to play a role in this fascinating and important debate, and we believe that Kents Cavern is the prime site where answers could be found."

Anthony Gormley - Turner Prize Winner 27th of June - 23rd of August
Location: Torre Abbey, Torquay.
Visitor Information - Tel: 01803 293593
Don't miss your chance to see this stunning installation at Torre Abbey in 2009. Free to enter, this exhibition runs from 27th June to 23rd August 2009 and will be the centrepiece of a year of contemporary art in the ancient setting of Torre Abbey. Built in 1196 by the ‘White Canons’ the Abbey is Torquay’s oldest building and its recent restoration will provide an unusual backdrop for Gormley’s thought-provoking installation.
Perhaps most famous for his giant sculpture, Angel of the North, Gormley’s Turner-prize-winning Field series is a startling and arresting sight: thousands of unglazed, fired, small clay figures, standing closely together, all staring towards the viewer. The Field for the British Isles’ comprising 40,000 clay figures will fill much of the Abbey’s huge Spanish Barn.
The Spanish Barn, venue for Field, is a mediaeval Tithe Barn originally built to store taxes paid to the Abbey in the form of grain, hay and other farm produce. The barn's unexpected name, and its place in the history books, was firmly established at the time of the Spanish Armada, when 397 prisoners were captured and held in the barn for a fortnight.
